Food waste is a huge environmental problem.
Every year, 7.3 million tonnes of food is wasted in Australia—In the manufacturing and wholesale stages of our food supply chain alone 75 Kilotonnes of food is thrown out and ends up in landfill.
Fresh produce gets wasted for a number of reasons in the wholesale stage including poor storage and produce not meeting the cosmetic standards of supermarkets.
The negative environmental impact of throwing out fresh produce isn't limited to the wasted resources (water, land, petrol, etc) from growing them—it produces tonnes and tonnes of greenhouse gases!
When food reaches our landfills, they anaerobically decompose and produce Methane, a greenhouse gas that's 80x more potent than Carbon Dioxide. So much Methane is produced around the world due to food waste that if food waste were a country, it'd be the 3rd worst greenhouse gas emitter, producing eight per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions!
...This is why we created our boxes.
Our boxes are built a little different
Knowing what we know about food waste and the negative impacts on the environment, we had to make our boxes a little differently to others.
We don't only want our boxes to minimise negative impact to the environment, we want them to create a positive impact.
That's why every month, we plant a tree for every Bring Me Home Box subscriber.
Reducing food waste.
To minimise wholesale food waste, every produce and protein box is what Masterchef likes to call a "Mystery Box"—the contents of every box will be a delicious surprise every week! Our local suppliers curate these boxes every week for seasonality, freshness and availability.
Our boxes also contain "imperfect produce". Fruits and veggies that are still super delicious but aren't sold to supermarkets just because they look a little diffferent!
Minimal produce packaging.
Our produce boxes don't come in fancy boxes lined with bubble wrap, and we love it that way. Each delivery comes in a re-usable box from our suppliers, with little-to-no plastic packaging.
Our drivers can also pick up your box during your next delivery... unless your cat's already claimed it as their own.
We've purposefully partnered with local suppliers who can ensure low food miles for the fruit, veg and meats that go into our boxes. This means that you're getting fresher ingredients that taste better because they haven't been frozen and flown from Timbuktu!
